§ 07Industries / IND-06

Oilfield & industrial fluids

Oilfield and industrial fluid service combines the gasket compatibility question with the worst handling environments we see. Both are manageable with the right specification, and both are frequently got wrong at purchase.

Chemistry
Predominantly hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon-containing
Sites
Remote, unpaved, often without equipment
Handling
Hard — cage impact damage is common
Documentation
Variable; multi-contractor sites lose records

§ 07.aWhat arrives in totes

The products we see in this sector.

  • Drilling fluid additives
  • Corrosion and scale inhibitors
  • Biocides and oxygen scavengers
  • Lubricants and hydraulic fluids
  • Demulsifiers and surfactant packages
  • Methanol and glycol-based hydrate inhibitors

§ 07.bWhat we recommend

Specification for this duty.

Gasket
Viton or Buna-N — never EPDM in oil service
Bottle
Fluorinated HDPE for aromatic content; stainless for severe duty
Pallet
Steel — survives unpaved sites and rough handling
Grade
B or B- — appearance is never a factor here
Valve
Stainless ball where aromatics are present
Viton
For hydrocarbons

Or Buna-N, which is cheaper.

Steel
Recommended pallet

Survives unpaved sites.

Flatbed with onboard forklift

For sites with no equipment.

Note rows four to six: Viton is not a universal upgrade. Methanol, glycols and amines are all better served by EPDM, which catches people out.

§ 07.dSector-specific problems

What goes wrong here, and what we do about it.

Four problems we see repeatedly in this sector, with the answer rather than a sales line.

01

The problem

EPDM gaskets fitted by default swell and fail in oil service

Our answer

This is the single most common specification error in this sector. Specify Viton or Buna-N explicitly at purchase, and keep labelled spare kits on site.

02

The problem

Remote sites with no dock, no forklift and unpaved surfaces

Our answer

We send a flatbed with an onboard forklift. It costs more per unit and turns an impossible collection into a routine one.

03

The problem

Aromatic content permeates HDPE

Our answer

Fluorinated HDPE handles many aromatics as a surface barrier. For long contact times or repeated cycles, stainless is the durable answer.

04

The problem

Fill history lost across multiple contractors

Our answer

Field screening on collection, classified into a compatibility class. Declare what you know; unknowns are a different process, not a refusal.
