§ 07Industries / IND-03
Agriculture & crop inputs
Agricultural container flows are unlike any industrial pattern: a compressed spring demand spike, a yard of empties from May onward, outdoor storage all year and a regulatory obligation about what is left inside.
- Flow pattern
- Compressed spring spike, summer accumulation
- Storage
- Almost always outdoors
- Residues
- Triple-rinse obligation generally met
- Documentation
- Variable — product labels often weather off
§ 07.aWhat arrives in totes
The products we see in this sector.
- Liquid fertiliser — UAN and urea solutions
- Micronutrient solutions
- Herbicide and pesticide formulations
- Spray adjuvants and surfactants
- Seed treatments and colourants
- Livestock supplements
§ 07.bWhat we recommend
Specification for this duty.
- Default grade
- B or B- — cosmetic condition irrelevant
- Pallet
- Plastic or steel; avoid timber for outdoor storage
- Closure
- Vented cap — gravity discharge to sprayer tanks
- Gasket
- EPDM for fertiliser; check for solvent adjuvants
- Collection timing
- Summer, not winter
- Jun
- Best month to sell empties
- Feb
- Worst month
- 71%
- Timber pallet reuse rate
- 0.65cu yd
- Landfill diverted per unit
Fill history fresh, freight uncontested.
Labels gone, rainwater in, grade dropped.
Why we recommend plastic for this sector.
Measured crushed.
§ 07.cReference
Agricultural product classes and reuse implications
| Product class | Permeation | Reuse path |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid fertiliser — UAN, urea | None | Full reuse, any grade |
| Micronutrient solutions | None | Full reuse, any grade |
| Water-based herbicide formulations | Minimal | Full reuse |
| Emulsifiable concentrates | Moderate | Restricted to compatible duty |
| Solvent-based adjuvants | High | Restricted; often cosmetic grades |
| Oil-based surfactant adjuvants | Moderate | Restricted to compatible duty |
| Seed treatment colourants | High, with staining | Cosmetic grades only |
The two highest-volume categories — liquid fertiliser and micronutrients — are the most benign. Most agricultural intake is excellent reuse stock.
§ 07.dSector-specific problems
What goes wrong here, and what we do about it.
Four problems we see repeatedly in this sector, with the answer rather than a sales line.
The problem
Empties accumulate from May and sit until the following spring
Our answer
Arrange collection in summer. Information decays faster than material — a June collection grades better and gets better freight because nobody else is moving containers then.
The problem
Outdoor storage causes rainwater ingress and UV embrittlement
Our answer
Cap everything, keep units off bare ground, use any shade available. A missing 6-inch cap turns a 125 lb empty into a 2,300 lb freight problem and splits the bottle at the first hard freeze.
The problem
Labels weather off, so the fill history is lost
Our answer
Group units by what you know they held and mark the groups with a marker pen. Even rough segregation transforms what we can do with a lot.
The problem
Spring stock scramble when everyone buys at once
Our answer
Order in winter against a spring delivery date. Grade A- runs short in March; grade B rarely does.

Different problem? Different page.
Each of these covers a genuinely different container requirement rather than the same text with the name changed.

Give us the product, the volume and the duty. We'll specify the grade, the gasket and the pallet, and tell you if a cheaper option would do the same job.
